Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Welcome to bbnk.dhs.org's first invent a license day!
In the spirit of wanting to share ideas, but not necessarily make them completely available to any Tom, Dick, or Jane, I've invented the following license for some code I've been writing to demonstrate ideas for a rendering engine for Themis:
Copyright (c) 2002 Raymond "Z3R0 One" Rodgers. All Rights Reserved.
THIS FILE IS RELEASED UNDER THE "THEMIS IDEA TESTING" LICENSE. IT STRICTLY FORBIDS
ANY USE OF THE SOFTWARE IN ANY FORM FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN TESTING IDEAS FOR THE
THEMIS PROJECT. (http://themis.sourceforge.net/ ) COMMERCIAL DISTRIBUTION IS
STRICTLY PROHIBITED, AS IS INTEGRATION IN ANY PROJECT OTHER THAN THE AFOREMENTIONED
THEMIS PROJECT IN WHOLE OR IN PART WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN AUTHORIZATION OF THE
COPYRIGHT HOLDER. THIS LICENSE MAY BE UPDATED OR CHANGED WITHOUT NOTICE.
THE INTENT OF THIS LICENSE IS NOT TO PROHIBIT OR INTERFERE WITH OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPMENT
BUT TO PROTECT IDEAS WHILE THEY'RE IN DEVELOPMENT. ONCE THE CODE THAT IS PROTECTED WITH
THIS LICENSE IS EITHER ACCEPTED OR REJECTED, IT MAY BE FREELY TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER
LICENSE (WITH THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER'S PERMISSION), DESTROYED, RELEASED, ETC.; AT THE
DISCRETION OF THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER EXCLUSIVELY.
Copyright Holder: Raymond C. Rodgers, also known as Z3R0 One
It's not meant to be a limiting license; but it's mean to allow me to share my ideas with other people so that they can see what I'm talking about. If I decide to use what I've written in the demo app in Themis, then I can simply change the license. It also allows others to work with my code, while protecting us both at the same time.
Or at least that's my intent and I hope that's what people get out of it.
